It has been HOT!! But hopefully all our visitors have enjoyed our cool air conditioned rehearsal rooms.
Reggae has been well represented in the studios this month. Joining regulars Abakush who we mentioned in the May edition of the round-up, and Jimmy Lindsay, who plays Tulse Hill Jubilee Hall on 25th July, we had a visit from The Cimarons. Music legends in the true sense of the word, The Cimarons formed in1967 and are widely regarded as the first reggae band in the UK. Over the years they have worked with many top flight singers including Bob Marley, Desmond Dekker and Paul McCartney. There seems to be no sign of them slowing down 60 years later as they got ready for various festivals over the summer. Always a joy to see them at the studio. The end of June has seen the gentlemen of Bleech 9:3 working tirelessly in an 11 day lockout in Studio 2. It has been great to have these guys around, ever since their first time here, they have always been so lovely to us. The Irish 4 piece are really on the rise, if you haven’t seen them yet, we suggest you do. They are gearing up towards a UK tour in September as well as playing Latitude Festival (along with fellow BXHSers Keo and Deadletter). They are also on the bill for Rock and Roll Circus in Sheffield with fellow Brixton Hill visitors Wunderhorse headlining, and Baxter Dury – featuring long time friend of the studios Matt Racher (George Ezra, Kylie, T.I.G.Y).
Sadly, this month we experienced a theft from one of our rooms. It is only the second theft in the nearly 15 years we’ve been going, but that is still two too many. Thanks so much to all of you who shared our instagram post/kept an eye out for it/said nice things when you came in. Your responses lifted our spirits.
As a result of this random act of unkindness by an opportunist, we are looking in to ways to tighten up security, without making our wonderful community feel distrusted/making the place look like Fort Knox! Please bare with us x
Anyway, back to the music. Genre merging 6-piece Opus Kink were in ahead of their Rochester Castle gig with The Libertines. Before a full on UK/European tour in Nov/Dec, the ‘kink will be promoting their new album “The Sweet Goodbye” (out 31st July) with a run of instore shows, including Banquet, Kingston on release day.
Other BXHS regulars with upcoming gigs include:
- Punk noise/metal trio Headlegs play the Seapunks fundraiser at Calamity Tank in Leytonstone on July 18th.
- Gritty four-piece with punk pedigree, Temple Rose play the annual Dorchester Court Summer shindig in Herne Hill on July 11th.
- Hyper-Rock Band Newbuild cement their status as a staple of the London Underground Scene with two gigs at The Shacklewell Arms (July 19th & August 14th) and one at Paper Dress Vintage, also in Hackney, on July 31st.
We had another couple of visits from across the pond. With new album “Alone Together” out on July 10th, revered NYC hardcore trio Show Me The Body checked in for a couple of sessions ahead of their London show at The Cause. There is another chance to catch them live when they return to the UK for All Points East in Victoria Park on August 23rd. We did enjoy when BXHS regulars Hyperdense recognised SMTB and they had a good old chat on our ‘terrace’.
Our other visitor from the USA was Grammy nominated producer and rapper Mike Zombie. Signed as a producer to Drake’s OVO Sound record label, Mike took some time in our Production Suite – which is available to book by the hour – but we can be flexible if you want to book a few days/weeks. Just give us a call.
